Chapter 7

Author: Ariyannaxshiku
Game: Dragon Age II
Pairing: N/A

Athena watched in horror as Fenris' fist lurched forward and plunged itself into Serenar's chest, causing the elf to scream in what the rogue could only imagine was pain. She wanted to step in, to help her. But it felt like her feet were frozen to the wooden floor of Varric's suite.

She watched as the white haired elf suddenly jerked back, seeming surprised by his actions as Serenar wobbled and fell forward, her now limp body hitting the floor with a deafening thud.

"SERENAR!" Everyone else around her cried out. Athena's mind barely registered what was going on as she felt people push past her and run across the room. Out of the corner of her eyes she could see Fenris stumbling backwards as her other companions crowded around the lifeless body.

"Fenris…"She barely whispered his name. Athena could feel the rage building inside her as her feet finally found the will to move and carried her towards the perplexed elf. "Fenris! Why did you do that? HOW, could you do that?!" She screamed, jabbing her finger sharply into his chest as she glared up at him.

A voice in the back of her mind was telling her that angering him was not the best thing to do right now, but she didn't give a shit right now. Reasoning could go light itself on fire and run around butt-naked for all she cared.

Athena was expecting Fenris to go all out in a raged frenzy in front of her, but when she looked into those big eyes of his, she knew venting at her was the last thing on his mind at the moment and she immediately felt guilt wash over her for yelling at him.

The elf turned his gaze down to her, realisation now etched into his features. "I…I just…" Was all he managed to say before he turned on his heel and fled from the room.

"Fenris!" Athena called after him, but he was too far to even hear her at the pace he was running.

"Hey! You get your sodding ass back in here, you damned elf!" Isabela yelled, coming to stand next to Athena as she shook her fist menacingly at the door.

"Rivaini, just leave him." Athena said as she shook her head.

"I'm sorry? Did you happen to miss what he just did? I know you're sweet on the man but-" The pirate started but was quickly cut off.

"Isabela." Athena snapped, turning her narrowed gaze on the ex-captain. Isabela knew that the woman beside her was being serious when her full name was used.

"Fine." She sighed, holding her hands up in defeat.

"Will you two stop bickering and focus on the problem here?" Anders yelled, his voice sounding strained. They both turned to see the mage back to his normal self and Sebastian walking into the other room and placing Serenar on Varric's bed. They followed Varric and Anders into the room, worried for their new friend.

"Can you help her?" Liana asked, looking like she was on the verge of tears. Athena sat on the edge of the bed and took her younger sister into her arms, holding her tightly as she stroked her blonde hair to comfort her. Liana turned and hid her face into Athena's shoulder, not wanting to look at the pale figure that lay motionless only centimetres away.

"I'm not sure, but I can try." Anders replied, sounding uncertain as he straightened his robe before leaning over the young elf and getting to work on trying to heal her. "That sodding elf, I swear I'll kill him." He muttered harshly.

"Hey, you have no right to be killing anyone." Athena pointed out.

"Oh, and he does?" Anders retorted, venom clear in his voice.

"Don't you start pointing fingers, buster. You're both to blame for this." She said, her voice growing louder until it was almost at the point of yelling.

"He's the one that tried to kill her, not me!" Anders defended himself.

"But you're the one who threw Serenar into all the walls!" Athena reminded him.

"That wasn't me! I can't control what justice does!" The mage said, gritting his teeth as he tried to focus on healing the deep wound on the back of the limp elf's head.

"Yes, but you can control your anger!" The rogue said.

"If Fenris hadn't made me angry then I wouldn't have had to control it." Anders spat.

"You were the one antagonizing him!" Athena defended Fenris. She'd had enough of Anders always acting like the innocent one.

"Well maybe if he didn't brood as much he would've seen the funny side of it!" The mage shouted.

"Well maybe you should stop being such an ASSHOLE to him!" The rogue yelled back. Everything went quiet after that, only the sound of breathing from the others was all to be heard. Athena sighed and closed her eyes as she rubbed her forehead. "Look, Anders, just lay off the guy a little, alright? It's because of you two that Serenar's even in this situation. Put your differences behind you, at least for her sake." She added in a more calm and collected manner before letting go of Liana and standing up to leave the room.

The mage sighed heavily and continued his healing, glancing occasionally at the pirate, archer, warrior and dwarf that were standing in the corner of the room, looking awkward. "You guys are unusually quiet."

"We just…we're hoping she'll be okay, is all." Varric said after a moment. The other three nodded in agreement before Anders turned his attention back to the girl in front of him.

~**********~

The white haired warrior flung the door to his rundown mansion open and stormed inside and up the staircase. That mage was an idiot; a down right bloody idiot. It was the abominations fault that he'd almost killed that other elf.

Why had she even defended Anders? He was the one throwing her around like a rag doll, not him. Yet she still saved that mage from having his heart ripped out.

Fenris growled and threw his longsword to the side before walking over to the fireplace and leaning one arm on the warm stone. He'd been so close to killing him, so close. Then she gets in the way. The elf sighed and looked into the crackling fire, watching the flames dance around each other.

It was also his fault that Serenar had gotten hurt. If he had just ignored the apostate instead of reacting, like the bastard had wanted him to, then she never would've gotten hurt. He was so confused about all these emotions running through him. Most he'd never thought he would feel again after what had happened to him. This girl…she was the reason that Fenris was confused. She was the reason his emotions were going haywire. It was her that made him feel trapped here, that made him worry that Danarius was coming to claim him again, but she also made him feel…like he belonged. Like he wasn't the odd one out anymore.

He finally had someone else who'd been through the same experience as him. Not that he'd wish that upon anyone, not even that abomination Anders, but it was comforting to know that he was no longer alone. Even if Serenar didn't remember any of what'd happened to her.

~**********~

Varric walked out and sat down again at his stone table, sighing heavily as he absent-mindedly stoked his favoured crossbow. Everything had gone so wrong, instead of Athena explaining to us what we were all here for, poor little Bambi almost gets killed. And it was because of Blondie and that broody Elf, sometimes the dwarf just wanted to shoot an arrow in their asses to shut their arguing.

Seriously, they're at each others throats every five sodding minutes. And it's always someone else who pays for it. Varric just hoped that Serenar would be okay. He may have only known her since their trip to the Wounded Coast, but he was already quite fond of the little elf, it wouldn't be the same without her around and he knew everyone would miss her company, even if she was as quiet as a mouse.

~**********~

Isabella followed the dwarf and sat across from him, staring at the wine and ale stains on the cold stone. For once, she didn't have a witty comment. She wasn't moping around like everyone else seemed to be though. Sure, Serenar was a sweet girl, and she was worried about her, but she'd only known her for, what, two days? Almost two days? If the elf died then, yeah, she'd be upset, but she wouldn't mope about it. Isabella just wasn't that type of person, Even so, she did wish that Serenar would wake up, having depressed friends really sucked.

"Hey, Varric, you want to play Diamondback?" The pirate offered. Varric looked up and gave her a somewhat forced smile.

"Sure, why not. It'll help pass the time." The dwarf agreed, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a deck of cards.
